Global Warming a Real Threat Essay Example

A worldwide temperature alteration a Real Threat Paper Today we question if a worldwide temperature alteration is even a genuine danger to us. Many would state no, while others would state truly, and the rest either dont care or are hesitant. By and by I do accept an Earth-wide temperature boost is a genuine danger due to our age, yet additionally ages before us. People meddle with the Earths vitality stream with our regular exercises. We have expanded the measure of carbon dioxide since pre-modern occasions, and the impact of human prompted atmosphere changes are continually changing as the years go on. The fundamental way we meddle with the common progressions of vitality is by barometrical arrangement. Which is the concoction wealth in the earths air of its constituents. The discharges of human-caused ozone depleting substances cause the development of carbon dioxide in the environment. It is over 90% sure that people are causing the majority of it through exercises that expansion centralizations Of ozone depleting substances in the environment, for example, deforestation and consuming petroleum products (en. Wisped. Organization/wick/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change). All together in the event that nursery outflows proceed, at that point an unnatural weather change will proceed and the barometrical weight will keep on expanding. America has kept on expanding the measures of arbor dioxide in the climate since pre-mechanical occasions. The consuming of non-renewable energy sources that accompanied industrialization discharged monstrous measures of carbon dioxide emanations into the climate, which has helped cause a worldwide temperature alteration (Environmental News Network). In the course of recent years, human impacts have been the predominant perceivable effect on environmental change ( Karl; Thirteenth). Environmental change alludes to the adjustments in the normal temperature, the measure of blustery days, ND the recurrence of dry spells over months, years, decades, and even hundreds of years. The most punctual comprehension of this and ozone depleting substances was in 1824 by French physicist Joseph Fourier, he recommended that the earth went about as a cover or some likeness thereof. Albeit ozone depleting substances happen normally in the Earths environment, people contribute by uncovering since quite a while ago covered types of carbon, for example, coal and oil. At the point when we started to consume them as extra vitality sources the carbon discharges discharged quicker than the characteristic carbon cycle. All things considered that reveals to us we have to accomplish something other than what's expected. There are numerous ways that individuals can help forestall an Earth-wide temperature boost. Carpooling inspecting the vitality in homes, purchasing eco-friendly vehicles, and decreasing the power utilized in home are approaches to help forestall an unnatural weather change.

Mystery Hunt 2007

Mystery Hunt 2007 Im finally recovered from the Mystery Hunt heres the official synopsis of how the Hunt went down: The hunt began with teams gathered in Lobby 7. The Evil Midnight Bombers What Bomb at Midnight announced the hunt would contain 270no, 271no 271 1/2 puzzles, all in keeping with the first unpardonable activity of gathering the assembled puzzlers into a massive sudoku grid. The motivational speaker Michael Fauntleroy came in to save the day, offering the teams the opportunity to get the coin and win the hunt in a mere 25no, 15no, 5 puzzles, if theyd only sign a simple contract with some unreadable fine print. After nearly all teams found the coin within a few hours of starting the hunt, they realized that by signing the contract, they had sold their collective souls to Michael Fauntleroy Stopheles (M.F. Stopheles, for short) for a mere penny. To get their souls back, they would have to complete his course of videos on how to be really really evil in various fields, and all the puzzles therein. This would raise their Evilometers to a level where they could rise in power for a showdown with the devil. Along the way, they also had to complete a series of unfortunate events that would show how proficient they were in each of the seven deadly sins. These helped unlock their seven Sin Meters, which each were linked to certain thematic puzzles. Filling their Evilometers to a certain level unlocked a Hell Runaround, which led them on a goose chase through the halls of MIT and down into hell. There they received seven Hell Puzzles, all completely unsolvable without an additional instruction page gained by unlocking the appropriate Sin Meters. Finally, at each stage, the teams received a certificate of their evil achievement. These certificates were used in the final epic battle with the devil, after which the teams regained their souls and triumphed over evil. I played on team Lego My Ego, based out of the Simmons Hall dormitory (you know, the one with 5,538 windows). Simmons looks like it was made from Legos and is referred to as the Space Waffle, and the Mystery Hunt puzzles are quite humbling, hence Lego My Ego. So, at noon in Lobby 7, our team gathered beneath our team sign. As advertised, after we solved the first five Mystery Hunt puzzles, we determined the location of the coin: the Alumni Pool! So, we raced over to the Alumni Pool, only to learn that yes, we had sold our souls to the devil. We were now at the Mephistophelean Institute of Turpitude. We were given a certificate that read: Certificate of Really Really Evil Achievement: We hereby laud and recognize Lego My Ego regarding outstanding efforts in the Evil Discipline of selling ones soul. This opened up a whole new series of puzzles, which kept us working all night. One of the really cool things about Mystery Hunt is how, in some senses, it is a microcosm of MIT: students and professors (and alumni and friends) collaborate to solve problems. Heres some of our teammates collaborating on a puzzle: One of the classic puzzles of any Hunt with Dan Katz 03 is the Duck Konundrum. This Hunts version was D4: Ducks Playing Poker. Heres the description: Duck Poker is a rarely practiced poker variant; it is not popular among humans because the outcome is entirely predetermined however, ducks like it, because they enjoy watching humans helplessly follow directions. And, here are teammates, well, helplessly following directions: Heres the complete set of Duck Konundra: The Duck Konundrum D2: The Mighty Duck Konundrum (during which a wrench was instructed to be thrown at my head) D3: The Fellowship Of The Duck D4: Ducks Playing Poker Heres a nice close-up of Duck Poker: Another puzzle you may enoy looking at is this dance puzzle starring Hunt co-organizer and my former Baker House dormmate Jenn. Its worth watching the Quicktime video for the puzzle and the amusement: In the end, we solved 70 puzzles (according to the solving graph) and solved more meta puzzles than we ever had before. You can check out all of the puzzles yourself here. Heres a part of our solved puzzle wall of fame (of course, since its Simmons Hall, the wall is curvy): So, whats the verdict? Id say that this was certainly on of the best Hunts ever (if not the best). it was a hunt clearly written for the enjoyment of all of the nearly 40 teams participating, and worked equally well, I think for rookie and veteran Hunters alike. I hope that many of you will get a chance to take part in next years Hunt. Im hopeful that the winning team, Palindrome (Dr. Awkward), will write another amazing weekend of puzzling fun! U.s. Policies Towards Climate Change - 2401 Words

U.S. policies towards climate change has continued to develop throughout the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and currently Barack Obama. In this paper I will focus specifically on Clinton. One of the Clinton administration’s main goals was to make the United States the global leader in protecting the environment. Throughout Clinton’s administration from 1993 to 2001, the ambitious goals of environmental protection had many highs and lows. The United States had to make decisions about how it would go about tackling climate change and what roles of other countries would play. There was opposition in congress about how the U.S. economy would fare with many of the ideas the Clinton administration was coming†¦show more content†¦As, arguably, the only global power at the time, the United States spearheaded the dialogue on climate change. At some points the United States has trouble convincing other nations to come on board. This ca n be seen in documents three and four, where Japan is having some trepidations over industrialized nations involvement in climate change versus developing nations. It can especially be seen in document three where they clearly have different perspectives on where they see climate change in the long term. Japan is also skeptical of many of the emission trading s the United States takes part in because they are not quite sure how it would work and what position they would play. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs was particularly worried about China s role in this agreement also, they did not want to carry out strict reductions while China continued to pollute the air around them. In comparison, document nine also centers around the United States as it tries to get the most out of the present climate change agreement, by working with Ambassador Raul A Estrada-Oyuela. Documents three and four are more focused on the beginning of various climate change treaties the United States w as trying to conceive. While document 4 focuses on a climate agreement after Kyoto that would be in the United States best interest. Furthermore, Document one discusses the United States goals in reducing greenhouse emissions. It lays out how to achieve success in

9/11 Whose Fault Is It Free Essays

Whose Fault is it? â€Å"The September 11, 2001 attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks upon the United States of America carried out on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Four commercial airliners were hijacked and crashed, resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 civilians in the planes and on the ground. On that morning, nineteen hijackers, affiliated with al-Qaeda[2], crashed two planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City, and within two hours both towers collapsed. We will write a custom essay sample on 9/11: Whose Fault Is It or any similar topic only for you Order Now A third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon, in Arlington County, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a rural field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. None of the passengers survived (wikipedia)†. Just to think for a moment if on September 11, 2001, the attacks were not committed by hijackers that are affiliated with Al-Qaeda, but instead through a fierce thunderstorm and lightning, that just happens to occur in New York, and caused planes to malfunction and crash land, on the twin towers which happens to be the nearest building for luck sake.Of course the day will still be one of the worst days in American history, and the families of the deceased will be grieving and suffering, only with a big difference. There will be no war in Afghanistan and probably not in Iraq, because the American population will not be seeking punishment for the perpetrators of the attacks. Now when we try to figure out what is the difference between these two beliefs, it is because we think that the attacks were pre-meditated, and carried out on the free-will of the hijackers, and their leaders who operate the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. To fully understand what I am trying to explain on what Aristotle was talking about on Moral responsibility, it is necessary that the following is explained, first and foremost; what is moral responsibility? What makes a person a â€Å"moral agent†? Can the person know what a decision is and choose to make those decisions by themselves? Under what terms can the person be held responsible for their own moral decisions? I. e. is the person free of Ignorance and compulsion? And what are some responsibility ascriptions that are used to attribute consent to the ubject, the things that risk factors, actions, consequences, etc? â€Å"Moral responsibility is primarily the responsibility related to actions and their consequences in social relations. It generally concerns the harm caused to an individual, a group or the entire society by the actions or inactions of another individual, group or entire society. This is the mechanism by which blame can be placed, and influences many important social constructs, such as prosecution under the legal system (wikipedia). My paper is focusing on how a person can and should be held responsible for their actions provided that they do not fall into the categories of Ignorance and compulsion. For Ignorance, a person should be held responsible for their actions if they voluntarily decide to be ignorant on a decision they choose to make. We as humans cannot be coerced into doing things and thinking certain ways, especially if we decide to educate ourselves on the decision we make; we have a choice to make.Everything we do has an outcome whether they are good or bad and because we make our choices, we will still be held responsible of what it is that we do and how we go about choices. For example, with the hijackers of 9/11, if any of them was to miraculously survive we would all agree that they show face the death penalty, even though we are not sure that they are not coerced into making the decision that they have made. To argue for moral responsibility, two factors are necessary and they support my thesi s. A person is morally responsible for their actions if it includes both Free will, and determinism. Now both of these terms seems easy to explain easily as freedom to make our own decisions and determinism as our outright determination that we are capable of doing something and choosing to do it. But for the argument to be made, I am going to have to explain a little bit deeper what both of these terms mean, and how they affect moral responsibility, to the point that if you have both of these terms together before you make a decision, and then decide to make the decision, you are responsible for the consequences of your actions.According to the dictionary meaning it is; free Will: â€Å"The power of making free choices that are unconstrained by external circumstances or by an agency such as fate or divine will. † Determinism: â€Å"The philosophical doctrine that every event, act, and decision is the inevitable consequence of antecedents, such as genetic and environmental influences, that are independent of the human will (Terminology). † They both infer that people h ave freedom to make decisions they make before they make, but Philosophers have stated that compatibility freedom is freedom that is responsible for the actions that we decide to take.According to the Philosophers, compatibility freedom is the when both free will and determinism co-exist together in a decision that is made. If a person is being forced to do something, like in the case of the suicide bombers for example if they were being controlled by some machine, or if the bombers were like walking robots, then we cannot blame them for the result of their actions in which they have been programmed to perform, then being a machine that is programmed will remove their responsibility from the act that they have committed. Then they could say â€Å"it is not my fault, I was programmed by this mad scientist Osama Bin Laden to control the planes and blow up the buildings† But we know that they are not machines, they have willing fully decided to get on the planes and carry out instructions by their leaders, and based on the article the mindset of a suicide bomber, One of the arrested would-be suicide bomber said to his interviewer â€Å"I was told that to be accepted for a suicide mission the volunteers had to be convinced of the religious legitimacy of the acts they were contemplating, as sanctioned by the divinely revealed religion of Islam. Many of these young men had memorized large sections of the Koran and were well versed in the finer points of Islamic law and practice. But their knowledge of Christianity was rooted in the medieval crusades, and they regarded Judaism and Zionism as synonymous. † My explanations for this would be, the term â€Å"volunteers†, and being â€Å"con vinced of the religious legitimacy of the acts they were contemplating†. If you decide to volunteer, this rules out compulsion, and if you are learned in the religion of Islam, you would know that you also know that the Quran is totally against killing oneself. O ye who believe! [Do not] kill yourselves, for truly Allah has been to you Most Merciful. If any do that in rancor and injustice, soon shall we cast him into the Fire. .. (Qur’an 4:29-30). â€Å"Nor take life – which Allah has made sacred – except for just cause†¦ † (17:33). † So knowledge of this also rules out Ignorance, and makes a suicide bomber morally responsible for their decision. The Libertarian view has been the biggest opposition to Moral responsibility, the point of view of a libertarian is that â€Å"†¦some human ecisions and actions, particularly moral and religious decisions, are strictly uncaused†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"these decisions are not even caused by our desires or character. They are very insistent on this: a truly free act is not an act which carries out our strongest desire; it rather, typically, goes against our strongest desire. † The libertarian is aware, of course, that our desires are largely a function of our heredity, environment, past decisions and so on. If free decisions are based on desires, they are not fully free. They are not in this case wholly uncaused (Incompatibilism). The argument is that responsibility can not be on a person, if he cannot have changed what he did. The argument is that people make the decisions they do based on the environment or some other factor minus the fact that people would do anything for there own reasons whether to satisfy their conscience, monetary gain, or for vengeance. It is obvious that this argument has no logical base in it, because it removes the free will of man. It argues that the decisions that we willingly and consciously make are not a result of our thinking but for external reasons. An example of the argument would be a person who decides to blow up the WTC, just finds his body moving, taking the bombs and strapping it to himself, and his legs getting into the car and driving straight to the WTC and his hands again detonating the bombs. And if he survives his defense is that â€Å"I did not do it my hands and legs did it by themselves against my free will†. Well since this is never true in real life, we control our legs, and arms, this man will be condemned to death through our judicial systems jus t like Timothy McVeigh.Using the argument by the Libertarians, it would make a confusion of our judicial systems because we would have to prove that decision was uncaused. This is needed in responsibility situations in our courts, just because you were not the instigator of the provocations before the attack does not mean you are not responsible for the attacks, this means that for example if someone made you mad, then you decide to kill the person, you should go free because the person made you mad, compared to I killed the person because if I did not kill the person he would have killed me or raped me.This also goes back and proves my point that free will and determination are both needed to carry out any moral decision making that would make you morally responsible for the consequences of your actions, and that causation does not eliminate responsibility, and makes the view of the libertarian unintelligible to say the least. In conclusion, based on the arguments and definitions above, a person is responsible for the decisions they make unless like Aristotle has said that they are not free from Ignorance and Compulsion. But a person who also willingl y neglects ignorance is also liable for the decision that they make, so also causation does not eliminate responsibility. We are totally responsible for any decisions that we make, whether it be good or bad, as long as there are no factors beyond our hands that are involved in the decision making. SHOULD CONGRESS DOWNSIZE THE U.S. MILITARY BUDGET Essays

"SHOULD CONGRESS DOWNSIZE THE U.S. MILITARY BUDGET?" The issue of defense of the countru should be priority for every government. It is very good that American government created such strong army with the most modern machines and system of defense. The United States should be aware of conflicts and terrorists' acts. It costs a lot of money, but safety of citizens should be provided in the first place. Every American feels, that he is his own country and he can be sure that in case of the war he and his family will be protected. The US is currently spending close to $300 billion a year on military spending. In the Past-Cold war period, this represents a vast waste of public capital. In my opinion government spends too much money on military. The Congress should downsize the US military budget. Let's face some facts about situation inside US. United States are leadership country in the whole world and they are involved in all conflicts happening in the world. America has the most powerful army in the world, which is fit up with the most modern machines. Such strong army guarantees the US the highest position among countries. United States already have weapons, which could destroy the world and they still modernize it. Military spending today is higher than in 1980. In 1980 the government spent $134 billion for military and in 1988 this amount was doubled.. In 1994 President Clinton proposed to spend $264 billion (and only $54 billion to education, only $7 billion to pollution control). The military budget is nearly as large as the military budgets of all the nations of the world combined. America needs a strong army to be prepared for defense from other countries especially from former Soviet Union, whose military is very strong and contains a lot of nuclear weaponry. Such amount of dangerous arsenal can be used to initiate the nuclear war. The current atomic weapon of the US and the USSR add up to 50,000 bombs, which are equivalent to one and a half million Hiroshima bombs. The nuclear strategy for US and USSR was based on deterrence and it was only about who had more power. Even though these countries reached agreement in reducing nuclear weapon, both of them still have enough to destroy the whole life on the planet. The budget of America is mostly based on taxes. For every dollar we spend in our income taxes, 52 cents are taken for military spending and only 2 cents are reserved for education. America is on the first place in spending money for military and only on the tenth place in spending on education . The fact that the US have such strong army does not mean that the US have no problems at all. The US government should consider that every year 10,000 children die because of poverty and only 5% of 196 military budget would lift every child in need out of poverty. The unemployment is next problem of USA. According to statistics, for one billion dollars spent for military 12,000 jobs were lost. The government allocates not enough money to make growth of American education. Two hundred years ago James Madison said: "Education is the true foundation of civil liberty". If America wants to develop itself in the future, it has to invest in education and science. In my opinion spending money on military is necessary, but not in such a big scale as it is now. Fifty percent of taxpayers' money spent on defense is too much. This amount should be (in my opinion) decreased to about 30%. Extra money, which we could get should be allocated for health care, liquidation of unemployment and growth of education. While budget for nutrition, health care, education and environmental protection are being savaged, President Clinton and the Congress have declared the military budget to be exempt from any cuts (projected military spending in 1997 are 258,7 billion). Cutting the military budget and transferring to civilian programs in education and health care would fuel a major expansion of education. This is a precondition for raising the standard of education and of living for all Americans in the 21st century.
